I have been immersed in art in one way or another for as long as I can remember. In my
youth, I attended classes at the Brandywine River Museum near my home, where I took my inspiration from
the area's abundant woods and the nearby historic Brandywine River area. I continued drawing and painting
into high school, taking classes in painting, pottery, sculpture, and jewelry-making.
Into adulthood, I decided to combine my artistic sensibilities with my love of the printed page by pursuing
a career in the graphic arts. In college, I studied design, illustration, color theory, photography, and
printing with top professionals in their fields. Wanting to continue building my skills in fine art, I also took
courses in figure drawing, pottery, sculpture, and weaving.
And so began a long, challenging, and rewarding career in the fields of graphic design, illustration and, later
on, copy writing, creative direction, and technical writing. (With evenings and weekends devoted to
painting and drawing.) I believe my artwork reflects the knowledge and skills I gained from each of those
experiences.
Although my earliest works (lost in a fire) were mostly of a more traditional style, I have experimented
with everything from surrealism to abstract impressionism. I think the common thread throughout
everything I create is the strong juxtaposition of form and texture. The lines of a living being, object, or
landscape have always intrigued me, and I love it when I can achieve a work that keeps the eye wandering
around and around those lines. Interestingly, I see the same pattern with the jewelry that I create. It seems
I am somehow compelled to create things with lots of the "ins and outs and roundabouts" that define
pleasing form. And of course, to paraphrase a favorite movie character of mine -- Albert from The Bird Cage
-- one does need a touch of color.
I have sold my art, both the fine and the wearable kind, through shows, commissions, and galleries. Having
worked my way westward from the East Coast, then Western New York, and then the Midwest, I now live
in Southern California with my husband, our two miniature poodles, one golden-lab mix, and the occasional
foster dog. Proceeds from the sale of my jewelry and art are donated to various animal charities. My
full-time job handles the rest of the giving and the bills!
